Wednesday will mark the fourth annual Jack-O-Lantern Jog, a 5K race to raise money for the fight against pediatric brain cancer.

Two University of Nebraska-Lincoln honor societies, Mortar Board and Omicron Delta Kappa, have teamed up again this year to make the event happen. The philanthropy chairs of ODK, Kaitlin Kueny and Joshua Abels, are in charge of the Jack-O-Lantern Jog as well as planning other philanthropy events for ODK throughout the year.

“The Jack-O-Lantern Jog is a family-friendly Halloween-themed 5K, and all proceeds and donations will be donated to Team Jack,” said Kueny, a senior biochemistry major.

The Team Jack Foundation was named after Jack Hoffman, a 10 year old from Atkinson, Nebraska, with pediatric brain cancer. Jack is a huge fan of Husker football and football player Rex Burkhead. Before his second life-threatening surgery in 2011, Jack got the opportunity to meet Rex in person.

Team Jack has partnered with cancer research foundation CureSearch and is still raising funds for undergoing research on a cure for the illness. Additionaly, it’s working to promote awareness of the disease.

On Wednesday, all attendees are encouraged to run in their best Halloween costumes, accompanied by music from a local radio station and plenty of glow sticks.

Check-in begins at 7 p.m. on the green space in front of the Nebraska Union. The race officially begins at 8 p.m.

Participants can also enter a raffle for gift cards from local business and restaurants.
