Local Volunteers Continue to Help the Team Jack Foundation Make a Difference

Thursday, June 29, 2017

On June 9, the Team Jack Foundation mailed out their last batch of direct mailers, thanks to many special volunteers in our community.  The project began on May 8 and the goal was to send out 25,000 letters to individuals across the United States to raise funds and awareness for child brain cancer research.  During the month of May, the Foundation held “Volunteer Days” at their offices and hosted over 20 volunteers total.  In addition, during the last two weeks of the school year, with the help of West Holt teachers David Gibbens, Tracy Gibbens, Janelle Wallinger, and Tina Dohrman, over 45 students assembled more than 10,000 mailers alone.  Prior to this most recent project, the Foundation’s largest mailer was 6,200 with the average size being around 3,000. In 2016, local volunteers came together to assemble a mailer that resulted in a $175,000 donation, the single largest donation the Foundation has received, to date.  Our sincerest thanks to all those who volunteer their time to help with these projects, we are overwhelmed by your dedication and truly appreciate your support.  Also, a special thank you to Michelle and Lenore at the Atkinson Post Office for your ongoing assistance.

Assembling and mailing letters is just one way the Team Jack Foundation raises research funds and awareness for child brain cancer. In addition, the Foundation holds many annual events, including a Gala in Lincoln, radiothons in Lincoln, Omaha and Kearney, as well as various color runs throughout the state. Much of Team Jack Foundation’s funding comes from small, individual contributions with the average donation being $74.00.  Because of this, the Foundation has the freedom to focus on research that matters most.  In addition to a nine-panel board of directors, the Foundation also has a seven-person scientific advisory board of nationally renowned researchers who assists in reviewing and selecting research projects.  To date, Team Jack has funded six research projects and just recently committed to a $300,000 clinical trial that focuses on better treatments for children with brain tumors.  This trial will be available at 14 institutions across the country including Dana Farber Cancer Institute, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Nationwide Children’s Hospital, to name a few.

One hundred percent of all profit after expenses goes to childhood brain cancer research.  Of every dollar donated to the Foundation, approximately $0.90 goes to research.  In comparison, Susan G. Komen and the American Cancer Society spend $0.80 and $0.73 of every dollar respectively to support their missions.  The Team Jack Foundation prides itself on their efficiency and ability to raise significant funds with low operating expenses.  The staff is comprised of two full-time employees and one part-time employee.  In 2016, the Foundation attained Gold Status on GuideStar, an online resource that disseminates information on IRS-registered nonprofits to increase an organization’s transparency and legitimacy to potential donors.  The GuideStar Foundation is important because it reports information about foundations all over the United States and helps people see whether nonprofits are following legitimate procedures and are accomplishing goals related to their mission. Another exciting announcement came this past March when Team Jack Foundation was selected to be a part of Community Heath Charities of Nebraska. CHC-NE is a corporate giving program that supports health charities. The Team Jack Foundation is only one of 22 member-charities and is looking forward to this incredible opportunity beginning on July 1st to raise funds and awareness using a new platform.

The Team Jack Foundation was formed out of a grass roots movement which started in the Atkinson community in 2013 and has raised over $4 million to date.  A large part of this success stems from the dedication of volunteers who commit their time to the organization. Thank you to all the volunteers for your commitment; together, we are making a difference!
